How to gather? Acting in a Center in a City in the Heart of the Island of Eurasia

Under challenging circumstances, the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art opts for a radical format and changes its structure: the biennale will be condensed into ten days. Artistic, discursive and reflective moments will shape the space. Located in the Pavilion No.1 of VDNKh, it is here that the Moscow Biennale will evolve, as a think tank in real time.

Biennale: Sept 22 - Oct 1, 2015
Documentary exhibition project: Oct 3 - Oct 11, 2015

Jermolaeva, Anna

°1970
Born in St. Petersburg, RU
Based in Vienna, AT

Anna Jermolaewa was born in St.Petersburg, Russia and has been based in Vienna, Austria since 1989. In her videos, photographs, and installations, she analyzes social interrelations and political circumstances as they appear in everyday life. The subtle humor of her works reveals the effects of history and power manifested in the individual’s experience.

“Political Extras” is a paid-for mass demonstration organized by Anna Jermolaewa. Through the website www.massovki.ru about a hundred demonstrators have been hired to demonstrate both for and against the Moscow Biennale. As a reward they have been offered a small honorarium – following the practice of some recent political demonstrations in Russia. According to the artist, by selling their political body protesters become mere symbols of purchased media manipulation in the guise of a democratic form of protest.
