How to gather? Acting in a Center in a City in the Heart of the Island of Eurasia

Under challenging circumstances, the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art opts for a radical format and changes its structure: the biennale will be condensed into ten days. Artistic, discursive and reflective moments will shape the space. Located in the Pavilion No.1 of VDNKh, it is here that the Moscow Biennale will evolve, as a think tank in real time.

Biennale: Sept 22 - Oct 1, 2015

Latvian artist Ieva Epnere's works include photography, video and film. She is interested in relationships between people and their behaviour towards each other. Besides observing and analysing people and their social surroundings, she also often collaborates on photography projects. Personal and private stories oftentimes become a starting point for Ieva Epnere's artistic reflections on identity, tradition, and ritual.

Renunciation (2014, Video, 20 min), which is shown on occasion of Moscow Biennale 2015, portrays the Catholic priest, who, instead of becoming a professional artist in his youth, decided to serve the God and people. Yet, no one can hide from himself or herself completely, and the artist’s nature constantly manifests itself in every step the priest takes. He has made it possible to restore sculptures and paintings in the churches under his supervision in the suiti district. Besides, his special mission is ensuring the collection and preservation of the liturgical textile art. Since the young priest started working in the suiti parishes, the chant singing in bourdon was introduced as a novelty in the traditions of suiti.
