How to gather? Acting in a Center in a City in the Heart of the Island of Eurasia

Under challenging circumstances, the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art opts for a radical format and changes its structure: the biennale will be condensed into ten days. Artistic, discursive and reflective moments will shape the space. Located in the Pavilion No.1 of VDNKh, it is here that the Moscow Biennale will evolve, as a think tank in real time.

Biennale: Sept 22 - Oct 1, 2015
Documentary exhibition project: Oct 3 - Oct 11, 2015

Saâdane Afif’s works are alterations. In performances, objects rather than sculptures, texts such as poems, or posters he deals with the formats cultural production and presentation. Common formats of exhibitions, plays, dances, writing or other disciplines are re-interpreted or changed by the artist.

Saâdane Afif will be present at the Moscow biennial with a work on site that is a performance as well as in instruction or secret undertaking from afar. “Play Opposite” (2015) deals with the play Ubu Roi by French writer Alfred Jarry from 1896. Around the turn of the century, the first performance of the absurd satire caused major attention for its bizarre and comic take on evil practices of power and greed. Conducted as a promotional or activist campaign, the play will be handed out in tracts and so be disseminated in fragments of hundred parts in public space.
