Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven (AMVK), combines different, seemingly disparate media to create complex installations. She does drawings, paintings, performances, computer animations and video installations. Recurring themes are the relationships between man and animal, between intelligence and intuition, and between human creativity and artificial intelligence. For AMVK, art functions as a tool of social critique. She questions existing power structures in the art world and in society in general. AMVK believes in the therapeutic possibilities of art: she underlines the healing capabilities of art and the possibility of making a constructive difference.
Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven offers an image that is based on The baroque Peter Paul Rubens altar piece ‘The Mystic Wedding of Saint Catharina’, now in the Fine Art museum, originating from the Saint-Augustine church in Antwerp where she used to go to mass as a child. It struck her that in the clair obscur of the church the body of the Madonna became like a black square. She let the image fall apart, rather as a field of energies, and complemented it’s right side with a Rorschach image, the kind of images that are supposed to be a projection field for imagination. The images is titled ‘Madonna and Leviathan’. Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven will come to the biennial to participate in discussions.
