How to gather? Acting in a Center in a City in the Heart of the Island of Eurasia

Under challenging circumstances, the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art opts for a radical format and changes its structure: the biennale will be condensed into ten days. Artistic, discursive and reflective moments will shape the space. Located in the Pavilion No.1 of VDNKh, it is here that the Moscow Biennale will evolve, as a think tank in real time.

Biennale: Sept 22 - Oct 1, 2015

Kukama, Donna

°1981
Based in Johannesburg, ZA
Born in Mafikeng, ZA

Donna Kukama’s works unfold as performances, videos. texts and sound installations. In the shape of laboratories for creative research they aim at a fictionalization of reality. Donna Kukama occupies existing canons by using performance as a strategy to invent and apply methods to evoke the unexpected. For her, performance can be “a medium of resistance against already established ‘ways of doing’.”

Donna Kukama’s performance for the Moscow Biennale will only be acted out once during the ten days. Her impact on the sociopolitical settings of the biennale could unfold as a poetic gesture, an addition of oddness to the situation or a disruption.
